Being a lifestyle photographer I photograph your newborn in your own home. My style is a mixture of natural shots and some that are posed, however I don’t do the typical studio shots you may have seen elsewhere (beanbags, tightly wrapped up in fluffy hats). I prefer to take images at home so it feels more natural and relaxed and you will have images of your baby just as they are, in their own surroundings. I do have a selection of blankets I will bring that we can use, or you might like to use baby’s own blankets, always lovely as it’s nice for you to look back on how your baby was with their own things!
The ‘ideal’ age for a newborn to be photographed is before they are 10 days old. This is when they are at their most likely to sleep more during the day and allow for those lovely curled up ‘sleeping’ shots that you might want. They change so much during the first 2 weeks it is often nice to have it done sooner to capture how tiny they were! This may not always be possible though and I will of course photography your baby at any age. After around 10 days they have a growth spurt it is more likely that baby’s eyes will be open and they will be more stretched out. This is still very gorgeous and all stages of ‘baby-hood’ are beautiful! There are no rules to when you should have your photographs taken, and I understand it needs to be at a time that suits you and fits in with your life and your baby.
Just do bear in mind that time is a factor if you want the sweet curled up shots!
You can book your shoot as early as you like, but during the second trimester is usually good. I will schedule you in for the week after your due date, don’t worry if your baby arrives earlier or later than expected, we will keep in touch and I will book an exact date with you as soon as your baby is born.
Absolutely! I love to include parents in a newborn shoot, it’s the perfect opportunity to have images with your precious baby. I love to include siblings too, even the family pet if you like!
The length of time will vary with each baby.. It may take 1.5 hours or it may take up to 4. Having 2 children myself I remember all too well that new babies will sleep when they want and cry when they want! I don’t want you to feel worried if they cry and won’t settle, it’s fine. I allow for this, when your baby needs feeds and cuddles, we will just take a break and continue when you are both ready.
Most newborn photographs are done when baby is naked to capture how tiny they are, and to show their gorgeous newborn features. If you prefer your baby to be clothed then just bear in mind they will look better if their outfit isn’t too big, some clothes can often swamp a tiny baby and while this is perfectly fine normally, it won’t look great in photographs!
If you want to be in the photographs too (which I totally encourage!) think about wearing something neutral, plain soft tones work best and won’t be distracting.
You can book by going to my Contact page, or if you have any other questions don’t hesitate to ask. I’d love to hear from you.
