Earlier this year I was approached by Suzanne, an old school friend, to see if i would be interested in being her wedding photographer for her Cotswold wedding in Winchcombe Gloucestershire.
“Absolutely!” was my reply. I felt honoured to have been asked and very much loved the idea of her summer wedding.
Suzanne and Dave have been together for 15 years and have two beautiful daughters together, Georgia and Erin.
Last Christmas, Dave bought Suzanne a stunning sapphire and diamond ring and Suzanne posted a photograph of it on Facebook.
Instantly prompting responses of “Congratulations!” and “When is the big day?!”
Although the ring hadn’t been intended as an engagement ring they thought “why not?!” and decided they would tie the knot!
They set the date for July 15th and set about planning their special day.
I like to meet with couples before their day to go over the details of the day. It also helps me to understand the feel of the wedding and what they want from their day.
Suzanne and I hadn’t seen each other for 25 years. (yikes! was school really that long ago?!) But on meeting up we instantly felt relaxed and at ease with each other. It was great to catch up on what life has brought us both as well as talk about the planning for her wedding day!
The wedding ceremony was to take place in the beautiful village of Didbrook at St George’s Church, followed by a marquee reception at Postlip Farm in Winchcombe. A beautiful setting for a Cotswold wedding!
What I loved about the venue is that it has two lakes, both of which have been lovingly nurtured and tended to by Dave over the past 8 years. It is a place he loves to come to for fishing and the girls also love to come to play. It is a beautiful spot with such personal meaning for the family and it felt like the perfect place for them to celebrate their wedding day. Suzanne took me to see both the church and the lakeside venue and I could envisage just how gorgeous it was going to look.
On the morning of the wedding I drove from South Wales to Gloucestershire along with my husband Michael who was assisting me on the day.
Here we met with my second shooter, Beth Lavin. The youngest daughter Erin took an immediate liking to Beth and followed her for most of the day! It was adorable!
The bridal preparations were full of excitement, the girls couldn’t wait to put their flower girl dresses on! They loved having flowers put in their hair by Kevin from Passionate About Hair and they looked so pretty!
While Beth and Michael went on to the church to capture the groom and guests arriving, I spent some time with Suzanne and the girls taking some detailed preparation shots and portraits before leaving for the church.
Wedding Photography Portraits
One thing that was very important for Suzanne was to have a photograph taken with her Dad. He was sadly not well enough to come to the church or reception but he was able to come to the house before we left for the church so that Suzanne could have the photo she wanted most of all. A photograph of her in her wedding dress with her Dad on the morning of her wedding day.
I am so pleased we were able to do it and this image is one of my favourites of the whole day. I know how much it means to Suzanne.
Photographs are very important to both Suzanne and Dave. I appreciated them being so happy to give me time for some beautiful portraits of them together by the lake. We even had some lovely evening sun which gave me the opportunity for some golden hour shots later on!
It was also important to them to have some lovely images of their girls. I love natural images of children just being themselves, as un-posed as possible. Georgia and Erin gave plenty of beautiful moments which I loved capturing.
Another moment I loved from this day is when Dave and his Best Man decided to go fishing on the side of the lake! And of course the Bride was called to hold the net to land the catch! It just had to be done!
When it came to the big group shot, Dave had a cherry-picker on hand to get the best shot! Whilst I’d have been happy to do it myself, this one I handed over to Mike, as he has no fear of heights whatsoever!
The evening got into full swing with The Chip Shop Boys playing some great music for the wedding party. The guests began to dance the night away with the bride and groom and there was some spectacular dancing from Suzanne’s brother Dave, whom I remember from years ago always liked a bit of rock music!
Photographing a cotswold wedding has always been on my wish list and it didn’t disappoint. I love to travel to different parts of the country to photograph weddings so if you are getting married anywhere in the U.K. and are looking for a wedding photographer, please get in touch. I’d love to hear from you!
This wedding day was beautiful, fun and relaxed and I am honoured to have been able to document it.
At Christmas time Suzanne contacted to me tell me that very sadly her Dad had recently passed away.
This was such sad news…
The one thing I am so happy about is that we made that photograph of her with her Dad happen. It is her favourite image of the day, he looks at her with such pride and love. She will always have that, and know that he was an important part of her wedding day.
I always say how photographs are our memories, and value them so much. It is at times like this that I feel it even more so.
Thank you Suzanne and Dave, I loved your special day, it meant so much to me to photograph it for you xx
